With flights being cancelled or delayed on a regular basis, it's good to know about Rule 240.Rule 240 basically specifies that if an airline can't get you to your destination on time, it is required to put you on a competitor's flight if it would get you there faster than your original airline's next flight. Airlines are even required to put you in first class if that's all that is available. However, with looming bankruptcies of the major carriers, they have attempted to weaken their Rule 240. Rule 240 also doesn't technically apply to newer carriers- Southwest or Jetblue - but they may have self imposed the rule. These rules generally apply to situations within the airline's control, such as mechanical problems. But if the flight irregularity results from a "force majeure event" such as bad weather, a riot, or a work stoppage, then all bets are off.

I'm not a big flyer but if I was this would be good to know. Being that I dress rather provocatively (yuk yuk) I'm thinking about taking a flight on Southwest just to see what happens :)
