Ikea is finally set to open in Fort Lauderale on October 17, 2007. People are allowed to start lining up on October 15 at 9:00 a.m. The Swedish retailer traditionally opens on a Wednesday, and draws crowds of shoppers who camp out in advance to gather freebies and be among the first to set foot in the store.Grand-opening festivities will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will include flag-raising and log-sawing ceremonies. Under traditional Swedish customs, log-sawing brings good luck to the home and all of its future guests. By the time 9 a.m. rolls around, several hundred to several thousand people will be waiting in line for the doors to open, Roth said.When the store opened July 25 in Portland, Ore., the company gave away a free Poäng armchair to the first 100 adults in line and prize envelopes containing gift cards and food vouchers to the first 2,500 visitors.
Shoppers camped out a couple of days in advance of the opening. Ikea will allow people to start lining up at 9 a.m. Oct. 15, and will have restroom facilities set up on site. On opening day and through the weekend, Ikea has arranged for off-site parking at the BankAtlantic Center and will be running 14 trolleys to and from the store and the arena. Parking at the store's two-story garage will be controlled as well.
